Zerg Build Orders & Strategies

The following are the build orders I primarily use when playing Zerg.

4pool:

  • 4 Spawning Pool
  • Drone
  • Zerglings

Rush. “All or nothing” strategy; not advised unless you know who your opponent is and where he is. Cheesy and otherwise bad.

6pool:

  • 6 Spawning Pool
  • Zerglings
  • 9 Overlord

Not quite as cheesy, but not much better than 4pool.

Standard Build:

  • 9 Overlord
  • 11 Spawning Pool
  • 12 Hatchery

Alternative Build:

  • 9 Spawning Pool
  • 9 Overlord
  • 11 Hatchery

Use if you start relatively close to your opponent, i.e. not at opposite ends of the map.

Strategies:

Generally speaking, you want to start with Zerglings.

ZvZ - Get Mutalisks, possibly Devourers if your opponent is doing the same.

Mid-game:
ZvT - Zerglings to Speedlings, Hydralisks and Mutalisks. Mutalisks are weak, though, so don’t continuously pump them out.
ZvP - Depending on your opponent’s builds, go with ground, either melee or ranged (see End Game below). Combinations of Speedlings, Hydralisks, and Lurkers do well, and even Mutalisks to some point. Also remember to upgrade.

End game:
ZvT - Finish the game with Cracklings, Ultralisks, Defilers, and Lurkers, possibly Scourge and Guardians if needed.
ZvP - Cracklings, Ultralisks, Defilers, or Hydralisks and Lurkers
