Think Beatmania, but on your keyboard, and no DJ turntable. It’s still seven keys, though, so the challenge is still there…
Using the s, d, f, j, k, l keys (on a QWERTY keyboard) and the space bar, it’s quite a different simulation game from the others, kind of like a mix between Beatmania and Stepmania.

It’s quite fun, but a few downsides:
1. You have to pay cash to make your avatar awesome and to play certain songs
2. You need to play with/against other people after level 10
3. It’s a pain to raise in-game money for songs and avatar gear

The game itself perfectly fine, just some logistical things like the above mentioned. You get to play a bunch of songs, ranging from Kpop to classical to electronica, so there’s a fair amount of variety.

Now for strategy and tips for improving:
1. Practice! First and foremost, you have to practice to do well. There’s no cheat that’ll increase your skill instantly, sorry. So just play a lot.
2. O2Jam has a really different timing window from the Konami simulation games; it’s not based on being off by milliseconds, but by BPM. Easiest way to get Cools is to just feel the beat and hear the music, instead of playing visually.
3. Warm-up your hands before playing. If it’s a cold winter day, your hands are probably going to be cold too; warm them up before playing and you’ll be able to play much better.
4. Keep your fingers on the keys. It’s a stylistic issue, yes, but you’ll progress much faster if you keep your fingers on the s, d, f, j, k, l keys, with your thumbs on the space bar. Soon you’ll be able to instantly react to “steps” without thinking about it, that is key.
